My wife and I had a late lunch at Thai Oishi Restaurant in Lakeland recently. It was our first time there. They offer a combination of Thai food, sushi, and seafood. It’s a pretty small space – that’s not a complaint, just be aware at peak times there may not be a lot of space.
We’re typically early eaters, but this time we were eating lunch well after 1PM. When we first arrived, most of the tables were occupied, but they were still able to seat us promptly. Despite the restaurant being busy, the noise level never interfered with our conversation. There was also some music playing, what sounded like perhaps Thai pop music, but the volume was low, so it wasn’t a distraction. Our hostess was very pleasant, we were quite happy with the level of service.
We both ordered Thai iced tea to drink. They came in funky Mason-type jars with handles, and tasted delicious. I only had Thai iced tea for the first time a few years ago, and I generally order it whenever a restaurant offers it.
Thai Oishi has a diverse menu, with sushi, noodle dishes, curries, fried rice, seafood, and beef, chicken, or tofu dishes. For lunch, I ordered two sushi rolls, a crunch roll and a mango tango roll (in the photo above, the mango tango roll is on top, the crunch roll is below it). The mango tango roll has shrimp tempura, cucumber, avocado, tuna, and is topped with eel sauce and mango sauce. The crunch roll has crab tempura, cucumber and avocado, and is topped with a spicy mayo and eel sauce. Their online menu has descriptions of all the various sushi offerings, and it identifies which sushi options are fully cooked for anyone uncomfortable eating raw seafood. The crunch roll was my favorite – a little spicy without being too much – but I thought both rolls were excellent, very flavorful.
My wife ordered pan fried noodles – there are several varieties, but she chose shrimp with vegetables. She was very happy with her lunch. There were plenty of shrimp and vegetables, including baby corn, carrots, and Chinese cabbage. The noodles were perfectly cooked and the sauce was outstanding.
Good show! We enjoyed our lunch a great deal. It did seem a little pricey – with tip, our total was about $45 (and that’s without appetizers or dessert). Still, the food and service were excellent, and the portions were good-sized, so we have no complaints. Thai Oishi Restaurant is in Lakeside Village in Lakeland.
