My wife and I were in the mood for pizza recently, so we decided to head to Palace Pizza in downtown Lakeland. I’ve been to Palace Pizza several times but it had been a while. They have a great corner location that allows plenty of natural light inside. There are a number of outside tables, but it was chilly the day we were there, so we sat inside.
The inside is classic pizzeria, bright and clean. There is a TV but thankfully we couldn’t hear it. The music was a fun selection of “Italian” music ranging from Sinatra to Italian-language pop, and it was played at a soft enough volume to make for easy conversation.
We got off to a good start when we were greeted by a cheerful young woman who took our order. We started off with an appetizer of garlic knots, delicious bread covered with garlic butter and served with a tomato-based dipping sauce. We didn’t have to wait long for the garlic knots. A nicely decadent way to start a meal. Two fountain drinks (they have Cherry Coke!) for our beverages.
Our main courses were brought out soon after. My wife ordered a spinach and broccoli calzone, which in addition to the veggies includes garlic, ricotta and mozzarella. It came with a generous amount of marinara sauce for dipping. The calzone was outstanding (and if you’re not sure of the difference between a calzone and a stromboli, check out this explanation).
I ordered 2 slices of pizza, one slice of pepperoni and bacon with regular crust and one slice of pepperoni and sausage with thick crust. This was good, hearty, pizza, and not loaded with grease like some pizza places. I especially like the pepperoni and bacon.
With tip, our total came to around $20. A good deal for a delicious lunch and great service. And Palace Pizza is a fun location, a nice spot for people watching inside the restaurant and in the surrounding downtown area. Palace Pizza is in downtown Lakeland on South Kentucky Avenue, just south of West Main Street. Enjoy!
