A number of folks in Polk County were still without power, as a result of Hurricane Irma, when my wife and I went out for lunch in Lakeland recently. Some restaurants were still getting caught up from their own recovery and were still seeing above-average crowds from customers in need of a hot meal. We were in the mood for pizza and stopped in at J. Burns’ Pizza Shop. It was early and not crowded, but the manager (we think?) described how busy they had been during the week after the hurricane.
The interior was spotless with stylish concrete floors. Our only issue with the entire experience was some God-awful power ballad pop music that was playing a little too loud for our liking. J. Burns’ menu has a number of signature pizzas, including a gluten free crust, or you can customize your own from available toppings. They also offer a variety of sub sandwiches and salads.
We ordered 7″ pizzas – my wife chose the chicken-bacon-ranch and I customized mine with pepperoni and mushrooms. Two fountain drinks for beverages. At J. Burns’, you place your order at the front counter, then the food is brought out to you.
Our food was brought out promptly (within 15 minutes?). It was presented simply but looked and tasted delicious. The crust was well cooked. Toppings were plentiful.
The 7″ is good sized for a light lunch. If you are hungry, we recommend a larger size. But everything was excellent. As an added bonus, for no apparent reason, we were offered free ice cream sandwiches after we finished our pizza. Be nice to the staff in restaurants, because you never know what bonus you might receive.
With tip, our total was only $18. We enjoyed the entire experience and look forward to returning to J. Burns’. If you are looking for some tasty pizza in a casual atmosphere, you can’t go wrong with J. Burns’ Pizza Shop. They are located on East Edgewood Drive just west of Bartow Road in Lakeland.
