My wife and I were in the mood for something sweet on a recent Sunday morning. So we headed over to Hole in One Donuts near Lake Bentley in Lakeland. Hole in One Donuts is actually a small chain with several stores in west-central Florida, and they have an interesting history. Ours in Lakeland is technically store #5, according to their Facebook page.
Hole in One is a popular spot in Lakeland. How do we know this?
That was okay, however, because they open early (7 days a week!) and the efficient staff kept the line moving quickly. They offer some breakfast sandwiches, but we were there for the doughnuts. From the temptations on display, we chose 2 glazed sour cream doughnuts, 1 glazed twist, and 1 zebra (a doughnut with vanilla and maple frosting).
It’s a fairly good-sized restaurant for a doughnut shop, with plenty of tables, but we got our doughnuts to go and brought them home to savor. And savor we did. I’ll gladly accept doughnuts from the chains like Krispy Kreme or Dunkin’ Donuts, but there’s something especially satisfying about doughnuts from a locally owned business. And these doughnuts were no exception in their exceptionalism. Perfectly prepared, sweet and gooey, appropriately dense and, well, doughnut-tastic.

The prices were very reasonable. Our total, including what we put in the tip jar, was only about $4. Hole in One Donuts is located in the Edgewood Center strip mall on East Edgewood Drive in Lakeland, just west of Bartow Road and about a mile north of the Polk Parkway. If you’ve got a sweet tooth, Hole in One is highly recommended.
