The last few months have been a hectic time for Polk Eats. So when my wife and I were recently in the mood for delicious food in a good location, preferably with milkshakes, we knew exactly where to go. The Chop Shop Bar & Grill has been a presence in downtown Lakeland for years. Their location on South Kentucky Avenue lends itself to a pleasant stroll around the neighborhood, and Lake Mirror is short walk away.
It looked like the restaurant had just opened when we got there. The Chop Shop is a sit-down restaurant but you order at the counter, then your food is brought out to you. The decor is a fun, fifties, rockabilly style, with signs, photos, and other objects all over the walls. There is a pool table and a video arcade game. There is also some outdoor seating if you’re so inclined.
We received friendly service as we placed our order and throughout the meal. The menu includes a variety of burgers, sandwiches, and some salads. On this particular day, the restaurant had a bison burger special that included fries and a fountain drink. Both of us chose the special. We also ordered milkshakes – coffee for my wife and salted caramel for me. We didn’t have to wait long for our food.
Everything was outstanding, exactly as we’ve come to expect from previous visits to the Chop Shop. The milkshakes are some of the best I’ve had in Polk County, they even came with a cherry on top. If you’ve never had bison, it tastes very similar to regular beef but it’s a little more tender and slightly sweeter in flavor. The burgers came with plenty of toppings (tomato, lettuce, onion). The bacon was well cooked. The fries were crispy.
The Chop Shop can get a little noisy for me sometimes, but it is a festive, casual environment with hearty food that is well prepared. While it’s not cheap – our total with tip (remember, we had milkshakes in addition to our meal) came to just over $46 – you get plenty of good food in an excellent location. We would recommend the Chop Shop anytime you are looking for a place to eat in downtown Lakeland.
